Saber Tooth Cat Skull

SKU: GD-F1445W Category:

This is truly a fantastic example of a Smilodon fatalis saber tooth cat skull. Florida specimens are extremely rare with no complete skulls and a select few, mostly complete skulls on record. Florida specimens have been found primarily in river beds or sink holes, whereas, specimens from the La Brea tar pits of California are far more common and complete, likely owing to the ideal conditions the tar pits offer for preservation and capture.

Most of the original specimen, the complete basicrania, was recovered as a single intact section in the late 1990’s. The remaining extra-cranial skull material and dentition were recovered as separate sections and elements. The specimen is authentic with estimated 15 – 20% restoration. It has a natural grey/beige patina over fossil bone with an attractive dark brown/ black fossilized enamel patina.
