Cave Lion Skull
A ferocious felid predator from the Ice Age, this exquisitely preserved cave lion skull showcases the features that define Panthera spelaea.
This extinct species of lion lived on the plains of Europe and Asia in the Middle Pleistocene. It is distinguished from modern lions by skull and teeth features, was larger measuring 4 feet at the withers and 7 feet long (not including the tail), and lacked a large mane and tail tuft.
This cave lion skull belonged to a large male, and at 17 inches (42 cm) long, is probably one of the largest ever found. The fossil is 98% original and authentic with minimal restoration, only the lower jaw incisors and one maxilla pre-molar are replaced. The dark coloration is natural and confirms high mineralization of the bone. The skull is carbon dated to approximately 54,000 years ago. Handsomely displayed, as if floating above the custom iron and ebony base this amazing, irreplaceable specimen is suitable for the most distinguished scientific institutions and collectors.
